About this tool

Takes a bill, a tip percentage and a headcount and returns the tip, the total, and the per-person share, plus the tip portion each person is covering. The tip presets (10, 15, 18, 20) are one tap. 'Round up per person' rounds each share up to the next cent and recalculates the total from there, so a three-way split of an awkward number collects enough rather than a cent short — the tool shows exactly how much rounding added.

How it works

Tip        = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
Total      = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ People

The tip is worked out on the bill, the total is split evenly, and each amount is rounded to the cent. With “round up” on, each share is rounded up to the next cent so the shares cover the whole total.

Worked examples
QuestionWorkingAnswer
An $84.60 bill with an 18% tip, split 3 ways84.60 × 0.18 = 15.23 tip; 99.83 ÷ 3$33.28 each ($99.83 total)

When to use it

Splitting a restaurant or bar bill evenly at the table.
Deciding a tip quickly from a percentage you have in mind.
Working out each person's share when the total does not divide cleanly.
Checking a bill's suggested-tip lines before you sign.

Questions

Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

On whatever you type into the bill field. Enter the pre-tax subtotal to tip on that; enter the total including tax to tip on the full amount. The tool does not know which your bill shows, so decide and enter accordingly.

What does 'round up per person' actually do?

Without it, each share is the total divided by the headcount, rounded to the nearest cent — which can leave the collected amount a cent or two under the real total. With it, each share is rounded up to the next cent and the total is recomputed as share times people, so the group always covers the bill. The 'Added by rounding' line shows the small surplus.

Can people pay unequal shares?

Not in this tool — it splits evenly. For an itemised split where everyone pays for what they ordered, total each person's items separately and use this only for the shared tip.

How is the per-person share computed?

The total (bill plus tip) divided by the headcount, rounded to the nearest cent. An 84.50 bill with an 18% tip totals 99.71, so a three-way split is 33.24 each — and the tip's portion of each share (5.07 here) is shown separately, useful when someone settles their food share by card and leaves the tip in cash.

What does 'round up per person' change?

Each share is rounded up to the next cent and the total is rebuilt from those rounded shares, so the group never under-covers the bill. On the 99.71 example, shares of 33.24 rebuild to 99.72 — the 'Added by rounding' line displays that 0.01 surplus for transparency. The setting earns its keep when the raw division lands on a fraction of a cent: rounding up collects enough, where nearest-cent rounding can leave the table a cent or two short.

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

On whatever you enter as the bill — the tool does not guess which your receipt shows. Etiquette's strict answer is the pre-tax subtotal; the practical habit is the bottom-line total, which is a few percent more generous. Enter the number you intend to tip on and the arithmetic takes it from there; the difference between the two bases is small but real on larger bills.

How much should the tip be?

The tool is deliberately silent on that; it computes whatever percentage you choose. The presets at 10/15/18/20% bracket the customary US restaurant range; in much of Europe a service charge is frequently already included and a smaller extra is normal. Type any figure — the presets are shortcuts, not endorsements.

Can people pay different amounts?

Not here — the split is even by design. For an itemized settling-up where each person covers what they ordered, price each person's items separately and reserve this tool for the shared tip only; perPersonTip tells you each person's contribution to it at the given headcount.

What happens with weird inputs?

A negative bill or tip is rejected, as is a fractional or below-one headcount — people must be a whole number of at least 1. A zero bill with a positive tip is accepted, which covers the tip-on-a-comped-meal case. All money figures round half-up to the cent, and the arithmetic is currency-agnostic: the output carries whatever unit you typed.
