About Text Cleaner

Tidy text that picked up junk on its way from a PDF, web page, chat or document. Switch on the clean-ups you need: trim each line and collapse repeated spaces and tabs, remove invisible characters, delete empty lines, join everything into one line, straighten curly quotes and ellipses, strip accents, or remove punctuation. The options run in a fixed order (invisible characters, quotes, accents, punctuation, spacing, empty lines, line breaks), and the counts show characters and lines before and after, plus how many invisible characters were in the original. Everything runs in your browser.

When to use Text Cleaner

Fixing text copied from a PDF where every line ends in a hard line break.
Removing zero-width spaces and byte order marks that break search, matching or imports.
Turning curly quotes and dashes into plain ASCII before pasting into code or a spreadsheet.
Flattening a list or address block into one line, or removing blank lines between paragraphs.

Text Cleaner FAQ

What counts as an invisible character?

Zero-width space (U+200B), word joiner (U+2060), byte order mark (U+FEFF), soft hyphen (U+00AD), left-to-right and right-to-left marks, and the bidirectional embedding and isolate controls. They render as nothing but can break comparisons, URLs and searches.

Why are zero-width joiners kept?

The zero-width joiner and non-joiner glue together emoji sequences and shape letters in scripts such as Persian and Devanagari. Removing them would corrupt that text, so they stay.

Does removing line breaks join words together?

No. Lines are joined with a single space, and empty lines are dropped, so the last word of one line never fuses with the first word of the next. Words split by a hyphen at the end of a line stay split.

How does accent removal work?

Text is split into base letters and combining marks, and the marks are dropped, so café becomes cafe. Letters that are not built from a base plus a mark, such as ø, ß or æ, are left alone.

Does it change the text I pasted in?

No. The input box is untouched. The cleaned version appears next to it, ready to copy, so you can change options and compare without losing the original.
