Convert latitude and longitude between decimal degrees and degrees, minutes and seconds.

Conversion runs in your browser. Map images load from OpenStreetMap, which receives your IP address and the viewed map areas.

About this tool

Convert latitude and longitude between signed decimal degrees and degrees, minutes and seconds (DMS). Enter either notation in each field, or paste a latitude-first pair separated by a comma, semicolon or new line. South and west are negative in decimal notation; DMS results show N/S/E/W directions. The map marker can be moved by clicking or dragging. This is notation conversion, not a transformation between coordinate reference systems or a way to improve GPS accuracy.

When to use it

Reformatting a location from a GPS device, photo or written note.
Copying a decimal or DMS coordinate pair into another mapping tool.
Choosing a point on a map and opening a radius circle around it.

Questions

How do I convert DMS to decimal degrees?

Add degrees + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600, then apply a negative sign for south or west. For example, 40° 42′ 46.08″ N is 40.7128°. Minutes and seconds must each be less than 60.

How do I convert decimal degrees to DMS?

Take the absolute value, keep the whole degrees, multiply the remaining fraction by 60 for minutes, then multiply the remaining fraction again by 60 for seconds. This tool rounds the total seconds before splitting them, so a rounded 60 seconds carries into minutes and degrees. For example, −74.006° is 74° 00′ 21.60″ W.

Which coordinate comes first?

This tool always uses latitude first, longitude second. A comma, semicolon or new line separates pasted pairs. It does not guess or swap axis order. N/S belongs to latitude and E/W to longitude; conflicting signs and hemispheres are rejected.

Why does zero sometimes show a minus sign or S/W?

A zero with S or W retains that direction, including a small negative coordinate rounded to zero for display. This avoids silently changing the chosen hemisphere. Exactly zero denotes the same equator or prime-meridian location either way.

How much precision is shown?

Decimal output uses six places and DMS seconds use two places. Rounding changes the displayed precision and may slightly shift a copied location. It does not add accuracy to the original GPS measurement. Verify coordinates independently before important use.

Can I convert coordinates at the poles?

Yes. Latitude can reach ±90° and longitude ±180°. The map preview only displays latitudes between 85°S and 85°N; conversions outside that map range still work. The radius link is available only when its default 5-mile circle fits within the radius tool's map limits.
