Map Radius Calculator

Draw a radius circle around a map location in miles, kilometers or meters.

Calculations run in your browser. Map images load from OpenStreetMap, which receives your IP address and the viewed map areas.

About this tool

Draw a circle around any supported map location using a radius in miles, kilometers or meters. Enter coordinates or click the map, then adjust the distance or drag the center marker. The map radius is measured over a spherical Earth model with a radius of 6,371,000 meters. Area and circumference are approximations on that model, not surveying measurements. The drawn boundary connects points at two-degree bearings. Map images come from OpenStreetMap; circle calculations happen in your browser.

When to use it

Showing a straight-line distance around a meeting place or event.
Comparing approximate coverage circles around different locations.
Sharing a chosen center and radius without creating an account.

Questions

How do I draw a radius around a point?

Click the map or enter latitude and longitude. Enter the radius and choose a unit. Click elsewhere or drag the marker to move the center. You can also pan the map and choose Use map center; the coordinate fields offer a keyboard alternative.

Can I draw a 5, 10, 25 or 100-mile radius map?

Yes. Choose miles and select a preset, or type your own radius. The same page handles all distances; Copy map link includes the center, radius and unit.

Does this calculate driving distance or travel time?

No. It shows a straight-line radius over a spherical Earth. A road journey may be longer, and a driving-time area is usually not a circle.

How are miles converted?

The tool uses the international mile: exactly 1,609.344 meters. A 5-mile radius is 8,046.72 meters and its diameter is 10 miles. Changing the distance unit preserves the physical radius, subject to display precision.

Why are some circles outside the supported range?

The radius must be between 1 meter and 1,000 kilometers. The whole circle must stay between 85 degrees south and 85 degrees north so it can be displayed on this map. Reduce the radius or move the center toward the equator if it reaches that limit.

What does a shared map link reveal?

The link includes the center coordinates, radius and unit in its fragment, after the # symbol. Anyone you send the link to can read that information. The fragment is not sent with the initial page request, but loading the map sends the viewed map areas and your IP address to OpenStreetMap.
