About Countdown Timer

A countdown timer with a large clock. Set hours, minutes and seconds (up to 100 hours) or tap a quick time such as 5, 10 or 30 minutes, press Start, and a short sound plays when the time is up. Pause and resume as needed. The Date and time tab counts down to an exact moment, in days, hours, minutes and seconds, for a launch, an exam or a trip up to ten years away. The time is worked out from your device's clock rather than by counting ticks, so the display stays right if the page is slow or the tab sleeps. The sound is scheduled ahead on the browser's audio clock, so it still plays on time in a background tab, and the tab title shows the time left. A full-screen button makes the clock fill the display. Everything runs in your browser.

When to use Countdown Timer

Timing a presentation, a lesson, an exam or a break with a clock everyone can see in full screen.
Timing cooking, laundry or a workout without opening a phone app.
Counting down to a launch, a deadline, a stream or an event at an exact date and time.
Running a quick timed round in a game, a meeting or a class activity.

Countdown Timer FAQ

Is the time accurate if I switch to another tab?

Yes. The timer notes when it should finish and works out the time left from your device's clock each time it updates, so a sleeping or slowed tab does not lose time. Browsers slow the timers of background tabs, so the display there may update only about once a minute, but the tab title and the finish time stay right.

Will the sound play if the tab is in the background?

It should. The sound is scheduled ahead on the browser's audio clock, which background throttling does not slow. Your device must not be muted, and the browser needs to have been allowed to play sound, which is why the sound is armed when you press Start. Use Test sound to check the volume first. If the computer is asleep or the browser is closed, no timer can ring.

How do I count down to a date instead of a length of time?

Open the Date and time tab, pick a date and time in your own time zone, and press Start. It shows days, hours, minutes and seconds left, and sounds when the moment arrives. The target must be in the future and within ten years. For a count in whole days only, use the Days Until Calculator.

Can I use it full screen?

Yes. The button in the corner of the clock makes it fill the screen, which suits a classroom projector or a stage. Press Escape or the button again to leave.

What happens if I close the page or refresh?

The timer stops, because nothing is stored and nothing is sent to a server. Leave the page open until it finishes.

What is the longest countdown?

A length of time can be up to 100 hours. A date and time can be up to about ten years ahead.
