About this tool

A spinning wheel for picking one name or option at random: whose turn it is, who wins the raffle, where to eat. Type one entry per line and each becomes an equal slice of the wheel. The result is fair by construction. The winner is drawn with your browser's cryptographic random generator (crypto.getRandomValues, with rejection sampling so no entry is favoured) before the wheel moves, and the spin animation then lands inside the winner's slice. The animation only shows the result; it never decides it. The list is saved in this browser so it is still there next time, and nothing is sent anywhere.

When to use it

Picking a student, a speaker or a presenter order in a class or meeting.
Drawing a raffle or giveaway winner on a livestream or screen share.
Settling a group decision: where to eat, what to watch, who does the dishes.
Running a draw without repeats by removing each winner before the next spin.

Questions

Is the wheel really random, or can the animation be rigged?

The winner is chosen before the wheel starts turning, by drawing a uniform random index from your browser's cryptographic random generator. The spin is then calculated to stop inside that slice. Because the physics of the spin never decides anything, where you click and how long you wait make no difference.

How do I give one option better odds?

Add it more than once. Each line is its own slice, so an option listed three times in a list of ten has a 3 in 10 chance. Duplicates are kept on purpose for exactly this.

How do I stop the same name winning twice?

After a spin, use the Remove button under the winner. It takes that entry off the wheel (one copy, if it is listed more than once) so the next spin picks from the remaining names.

How many entries can the wheel hold?

Up to 200. Names are drawn on the slices up to 48 entries. Above that the slices get too thin for readable text, so the labels are hidden, but the winner is still announced in full next to the wheel.
